Seats — whether they’re remote or in-person — have filled quickly for the inaugural Quarter at Aggie Square experiences launching this Fall. The experiences offer immersive curricula that integrate internships and community engagement at the Sacramento campus and surrounding neighborhood.

Biomedical Engineering at the Health Campus will give students valuable exposure to clinical settings for third-year major courses. The first cohort of 12 students has already filled, but a waitlist is available.

A few seats remain for Transformative Justice Studies in Sacramento, which will bring together a cohort of 25 students from majors ranging from Community and Regional Development to Chicana/o Studies to Animal Science. Students are attracted to the program’s community-based educational model and life experience.

“I want to understand systemic issues that happen in communities of color, especially communities that are near me and that I can relate to,” said student Beatriz Aguilar. “I want to transform the lives of youth, and I want to live experiences where I am transformed myself.”

With the fall campus status pending, program staff members are developing a flexible plan that includes remote class and internship options. “Even in the remote learning environment, students can benefit tremendously from the Quarter at Aggie Square experience,” said program coordinator Angela Taylor. “They will take their classes with a tight-knit cohort gathered around shared interests, taught by a dedicated group of faculty members.”

Two additional experiences are planned for 2020-21: Advancing Health Care Equity in winter and Multilingual Education for California in spring.
