Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter’s next forum (April 22) will address the role that public universities can play in regional economic development, while Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi’s next colloquium (May 1) will feature USC Professor Henry Jenkins, addressing “Democracy and Diversity in the Era of Spreadable Media.”

Both programs are free and open to the public.

• Provost’s Forums on the Public University and the Social Good — “Public Universities and Regional Growth: Insights from the University of California,” based on the forthcoming book of the same title from Stanford University Press. The presenters-chapter authors: Steven Casper, professor, management, Keck Graduate Institute; Christophe Lécuyer, professor, history of science and technology, Université Pierre et Marie Curie; Cyrus Mody, associate professor, history, Rice University; Daniel Sumner, Frank H. Buck Jr. Professor in Agricultural and Resource Economics, UC Davis; and Mary Walshok, associate vice chancellor, Public Programs, UC San Diego, and dean of UC San Diego Extension.

The book editors will make the introductions: Martin Kenney, professor, human ecology; UC Davis, and senior project director, Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy; and David C. Mowery, professor, new enterprise development, Haas School of Business, UC Berkeley.

The forum is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday (April 22) in the multipurpose room at the Student Community Center.

Besides the presentations, the program includes discussion with these participants: Mario Biagioli, distinguished professor, law, and science and technology studies, UC Davis; Andrew Hargadon, who holds the Charles J. Soderquist Chair in Entrepreneurship, Graduate School of Management, UC Davis; David Hodges, professor emeritus, engineering, UC Berkeley; William Lacy, vice provost, University Outreach and International Programs, and professor, human ecology, UC Davis; and Sean Randolph, president, Bay Area Council Economic Institute.

The discussion is scheduled to wrap up at 4:30 p.m., and a reception will run until 5:20 p.m.

• Chancellor's Colloquium Distinguished Speaker Series — “Democracy and Diversity in the Era of Spreadable Media,” by Henry Jenkins, an important voice in redefining the role of journalism in the digital age. He is the Provost's Professor of Communication, Journalism, Cinematic Arts and Education in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, University of Southern California.

Jenkins was one of the first media scholars to chart the changing role of the audience in an environment of increasingly pervasive digital content and is at the forefront of understanding the effects of participatory culture on society, politics and learning.
