Retiree wins tickets to men's Final Four in Dallas

UC Davis retiree and longtime Aggie athletics booster Jan Stallman has won the NCAA’s weekly drawing for tickets to the Final Four men’s basketball tournament.

“I was amazed, I do not ever win things,” said Stallman, who worked at UC Davis for 38 years, lastly as management services officer in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

As the third winner in the 15-week contest, Stallman’s name is posted — with the UC Davis athletics logo — on the ticket contest website.

Each winner has the choice of tickets to the Final Four or any of the preliminary rounds in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Stallman chose the Final Four, comprising three games (two semifinals and the championship game), April 5 and 7, at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

“I have a brother that lives about 65 miles away,” Stallman said. “I have already called him and reserved the spare bedroom.”

UC Davis Extension offers GIS as professional concentratrion

UC Davis Extension announced that it now offers a professional concentration in geographic information systems to meet a growing demand among land use and environmental planners, policy makers and natural resource managers.

The professional concentration has been designed for the GIS beginner as well as for more experienced users who want to sharpen existing skills or expand their skill base, said Julia Lave Johnston, director of UC Davis Extension’s Land Use and Natural Resources. “While our program uses land use planning and natural resources case studies, the courses will benefit a student from any background.”

Courses can be taken individually or as part of the professional concentration program.

The concentration focuses on how to analyze and model the built and natural environments in order to inform policy and policy decisions. Individual courses explore such topics as database design, programming, cartographic design and data analysis.
