University of California, Davis, Chancellor Gary S. May today released for public comment a draft of “To Boldly Go,” a 10-year vision for the university. The plan is the result of a six-month process coordinated by a steering committee representing the entire university community. The committee members collected broad-based input though many channels, including online and in-person town hall and small group meetings.

“I’m grateful to the community — students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, friends — who provided ideas and comments about where UC Davis should be in a decade and how we get there,” May said. “I want to thank the steering committee for their dedicated work and commitment to the university, and Ken Burtis, my co-chair, for his leadership. I’m confident UC Davis will grow stronger as a leader in research, teaching and public service.”

“To Boldly Go” contains five goals:

• Provide an educational experience that prepares all of our students to address the needs and challenges of a diverse and changing world.
• Enable and support research that matters at the frontiers of knowledge, across and between the disciplines, in support of a healthy planet and the physical and societal well-being of its inhabitants.
• Embrace diversity, practice inclusive excellence, and strive for equity; and make UC Davis a place of excellence for learning and working by supporting a culture that values the contributions and aspirations of all our students, staff and faculty, promotes wellness, and cultivates the open interchange of ideas.
• Support our community, region, state, nation and world through mutually beneficial and impactful partnerships that reflect a firm commitment to our mission while also increasing the visibility and reputation of the university beyond our borders.
• Develop an intellectual and physical environment that supports the development of an innovative and entrepreneurial culture that extends the benefits of our research activities beyond the boundaries of the university.

“We are eager for our community to review the draft, and to hear how the ideas presented resonate with people’s aspirations for the university,” Burtis said. “We understand that strategic planning is a dynamic process, and we’ll continually monitor and evaluate our progress toward meeting the goals presented, making necessary adjustments along the way.”

May, Burtis and the steering committee invite the community to provide feedback on the draft. Comments may be submitted via the To Boldly Go website until July 9.
