Chancellor Gary S. May issued the following statement today (Feb. 14):
Like you, I’m shocked by the shootings at Michigan State University last night. I know it is alarming and downright frightening to see and hear what the students there experienced. College campuses are not supposed to be places where gun violence is part of societal norms, causing students to fear losing their lives in the face of it. But here we are. Again.
My heart hurts for our colleagues and friends at MSU, who today are struggling to comprehend what happened and coming to terms with such tragic loss. We offer our condolences and share in grieving those cherished members of the MSU community. Their potential is now lost to us all.
Like campuses across the country, UC Davis offers active shooter training and survival workshops and has regular drills and practices in place to be as prepared as possible for such an activity. These drills and trainings occur on both the Davis and Sacramento campuses.
For our students, if you need immediate mental health support, please visit the Aggie Mental Health website for resource options through Student Health and Counseling Services and the Crisis Text Line. Faculty and staff can reach out to the Academic and Staff Assistance Program, which serves the Davis and Sacramento campuses.
