UC Davis will award an estimated 8,251 degrees for 2010-11 as it completes the academic year with commencements through June 12.
UC Davis expects to award 6,505 bachelor's, 865 master's, 448 doctoral and 433 professional degrees.
Guest speakers for upcoming ceremonies include:
- Mary Catherine Swanson, founder of the AVID program that helps prepare thousands of students for admission to college, on June 8;
- David Kappos, under secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce for intellectual property and director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, on June 10;
- Maurice J. Gallagher Jr., head of Allegiant Air and Allegiant Travel Company, on June 11; and
- Bill Sullivan, head of Agilent Technologies, on June 11.
More information about each ceremony — including the date, time and location as well as the numbers of degrees to be awarded — follows:
June 8 — School of Education: Swanson, a high-school English teacher for 20 years, founded AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a nonprofit college readiness program active in more than 4,500 schools in the U.S. and 16 countries and territories. Swanson received her teaching credential at UC Davis in 1967. 4 p.m. at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts; 25 doctoral degrees and 131 master's degrees (all included in totals for Graduate Studies) as well as completion of studies for 158 teaching credentials.
June 9 — Graduate Studies: 4 p.m. in the Activities and Recreation Center Pavilion; 448 doctoral and 581 master's degrees.
June 10 — School of Veterinary Medicine: 10 a.m. at the Mondavi Center; 124 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, 13 Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine degrees and 10 Bachelor of Science degrees; also 41 certificates recognizing completion of residency.
June 10 — College of Biological Sciences: 10 a.m. in the ARC Pavilion; 25 Bachelor of Arts degrees and 1,210 B.S. degrees. As this college, established in 2005, transitions to awarding its own degrees, an additional 15 B.S. degrees for the college will be awarded by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and an additional 15 B.S. and five B.A. degrees will be awarded by the College of Letters and Science (these numbers are included in the totals for the two colleges).
June 10 — College of Engineering: Kappos, who advises the U.S. president and his administration on intellectual property matters, will speak. He graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering in 1983 and later earned a law degree from UC Berkeley. 3 p.m. in the ARC Pavilion; 490 B.S. degrees.
June 11 — Graduate School of Management: Speaking will be Gallagher, who is chairman and chief executive officer of both Allegiant Air, which operates a low-cost, high-efficiency all-jet passenger airline, and Allegiant Travel Company. Based in Las Vegas, Allegiant flies travelers in small cities to leisure destinations. Maurice and his wife, Marcia Gallagher, established the Maurice J. and Marcia G. Gallagher Endowed Chair in Finance at the management school, and the school’s new building on the Davis campus is named in Gallagher’s honor. Gallagher graduated from UC Davis in 1971 with an undergraduate degree in history and later earned an MBA from UC Berkeley. 10 a.m. at the Mondavi Center; 224 MBA degrees.
June 11 — College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences: Sullivan, who is president and chief executive officer of Agilent Technologies, will speak. Agilent Technologies is a leading measurement company and a technology leader in chemical analysis, life sciences, electronics and communications. Sullivan received a B.S. degree from UC Davis in 1972. 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the ARC Pavilion; 1,370 B.S. degrees.
June 12 — College of Letters and Science: 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the ARC Pavilion; 2,875 B.A., 495 B.S. and 30 Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees.
At earlier ceremonies, the School of Law awarded 199 Juris Doctor and 21 Master of Laws degrees, and the School of Medicine awarded 110 Doctor of Medicine, 15 Master of Public Health and 11 Master of Health Informatics degrees.
Numbers of degrees include those earned since last spring's commencements and estimates of those to be awarded this season. Certificates and teaching credentials are not included in the degree total.
In 2009-10, the university awarded 8,125 degrees including 6,369 bachelor's, 865 master's, 480 doctoral and 411 professional degrees.
