The workshop series “Transitioning to Retirement” is set to begin in January for academics and staff members who are within five years of retirement.
The series comprises three-hour sessions on Fridays for five weeks, Jan. 10 to Feb. 7; each day includes a session for staff (9 a.m.-noon) and one for academics (1:30-4:30 p.m.). Space is limited, therefore early registration is advised; see details below.
In a news release, the organizers note how even the decision to retire can be a difficult one, after a long career at the university. Then comes the actual transition, which can be “as significant as other major life changes,” such as first job, marriage, having children, changing careers or relocating.
“The best way to transition to a meaningful retirement is to plan for it in advance” — and that’s where the workshops come in. Workshop leaders include UC Davis staff and faculty, and representatives from retirement-focused organizations
Topics include the UC Retirement Plan and Social Security, health benefits and wellness in retirement, financial planning for retirement, work-life transition and “the next chapter.”
“Transitioning to Retirement” is a collaborative project of the Retiree Center, Benefits Office, Office of Academic Affairs, Academic and Staff Assistance Program, and Staff Development and Professional Services.
Workshop descriptions are available online: staff and academics. Enrollment can be arranged via the UC Learning website (search for course number “011014”). You need not sign up for every workshop, but the organizers recommend doing so, because each session builds on the one before it.
