Aug. 8, Friday -- Tom Holder, founder of a group created to counter demonstrations by animal-rights activists at Oxford University, England, will talk about "Speaking of Research," a similar new organization he has established in the U.S. His talk will begin at noon in the lecture hall at the California National Primate Research Center at UC Davis. As a student at Oxford University, Holder saw increasing violence and intimidation by activists opposed to animal research. In 2006, he helped to found Pro-Test, which staged marches and demonstrations in support of scientists. Holder became the press officer and spokesperson for the group. In March 2008, he moved to the U.S. to establish Speaking of Research, with the support of Pro-Test and Americans for Medical Progress. Speaking of Research is a campus-oriented organization that aims to challenge the animal-rights movement and encourage students and faculty to speak out in support of animal research in medical science.
