Carl Winter, UC Davis' Sinatra of Salmonella and Elvis of E. coli, is back with an encore performance, releasing to the public his third CD just in time for National Food Safety Education Month, which spans September. The new collection of musical parodies is titled "Still Stayin' Alive."

Winter, a toxicologist and director of the UC Davis FoodSafe program, compiled his first two CDs, "Staying Alive" and "Sanitized for Your Consumption," in 1998 and 1999. The music in his newest CD is mostly vintage 1970s and '80s, with a little late '90s thrown in, but the words have been altered to carry light-hearted messages related to modern food-safety issues ranging from microbial contamination to mad cow disease.

Among the five new songs included in Winter's latest CD release are two concerning biotechnology, one rap piece and one song with Spanish lyrics.

The new offerings include "Stomachache Tonight," a spin-off from the Eagles' "Heartache Tonight;" and "Mantenga Bien La Comida (Handle Food Well)," a parody of Ritchie Valens' "La Bamba."

Winter performs his music in university classes and at professional meetings around the country. His CDs are available through the FoodSafe Web site at . The site also includes downloadable music, video clips, lyrics and PowerPoint slide presentations.
