UC Davis honors its military veterans next week with yellow ribbons on our quads (both of them); red, white and blue pins on our veterans; and celebrations on the Davis and Sacramento campuses.

The week leading up to the Veterans Day holiday also includes a training session for the Vet Net Ally Program, aimed at creating a positive environment for veterans at UC Davis.

Meanwhile, Human Resources, the Davis campus Veteran Constituency Group and the Sacramento campus Veteran Employee Association are continuing their campaign of asking veterans to self-identify, so the university can get a more accurate count of veterans who work here as faculty and staff. The data will inform efforts to recruit and retain veterans as employees and cultivate more career opportunities for them.

So far, the number of veterans who have self-identified by filling out an online form or visiting a tabling event is 115. The online “campaign tally” gives a breakdown of 75 veterans on the Davis campus and 47 on the Sacramento campus as of today (Oct. 30), categorized as follows:

• 40 Army
• 42 Air Force
• 25 Navy
• 9 Marine Corps
• 4 Coast Guard

One more tabling event is scheduled: noon to 1 p.m. Monday (Nov. 5) on the main Quad, Davis campus. Veterans are invited to stop by to self-identify and pick up a pin.

Ribbons on the quads

UC Davis’ yellow ribbon tradition dates back to 2011 when a student veteran-led effort adorned the main Quad’s 100-plus trees with ribbons as a symbol of remembrance of men and women serving far from home. In 2015, the ribbon project expanded to Vanderhoef Quad at the south entrance to campus.

All members of the campus community are invited to help put up the ribbons from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday (Nov. 5) at both locations. Ribbon (and donuts) will be provided.

Challenges for student veterans

He’s been leading the training for about a year and has trained approximately 75 people, all staff. He said he hopes to see faculty members get involved, too, as “the training would be beneficial for them to understand what student veterans are dealing with inside the classroom and their reluctance to go to office hours.”

• Monday, Nov. 5 — Self-ID tabling on the main Quad, Davis campus, noon-1 p.m. Veterans are invited to stop by, declare their status, meet fellow veterans and pick up lapel pins.

• Tuesday, Nov. 6 — Vet Net Ally training, 8 a.m. to noon, multipurpose room, Student Community Center. RSVPs are requested and can be arranged here.

• Thursday, Nov. 8 — UC Davis Health Veterans Day Reception, noon-1:30 p.m., second-floor breezeway, Education Building, Sacramento campus. Honoring staff, faculty and students veterans. Hosted by the UC Davis Health Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the Veteran Employee Association. Welcome by Jim Marchetti, chair, Veteran Employee Association. Guest speaker: Arthur Dublin, professor of neuroradiology, Department of Radiology, addressing the value of military service. A Navy veteran, Dublin served as a flight surgeon and medical officer at duty stations on the East Coast in the early 1970s. RSVPs can be arranged by email or by calling 916-734-2926.

• Thursday, Nov. 8 — Veterans Day Appreciation Lunch, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., 114 South Hall, Davis campus. All faculty, staff and students are welcome.

If you attend the Nov. 8 Veterans Celebration at the Buehler Alumni Center, you will have the opportunity to see the exhibition “A Salute to All Our Veterans,” which runs through Nov. 30 at the center.
