With every day that we follow the Principles of Community, we reaffirm them. But every couple of years or so, we reaffirm them with a ceremony, like the one in Freeborn Hall in April 2010 when the principles turned 20 years old

At that time, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi signed the document for the first time, having arrived on campus the previous August.

Next week, the UC Davis Health System will hold a similar ceremony, also featuring a newcomer to UC Davis: Julie A. Freischlag, the new vice chancellor of Human Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine.

The ceremony, noon-1 p.m. Monday (Feb. 24) will be the first event of Principles of Community Week, celebrated on the Sacramento and Davis campuses.

The Davis campus will start Principles of Community Week with Cultural Awareness Night, 6:30-9:30 Monday (Feb. 24). Other programs the next three days will include “Social Justice 101,” “Soul Speaks," “Dialogue on Religious Diversity" and a film, Brother Outside: The Life of Bayard Rustin.

All activities here and in Sacramento are free and everyone’s invited, no signups required — with one exception, a Feb. 27 staff event in Davis. RSVPs for “How Can We Build Greater Campus and Workplace Community?” are due by Wednesday (Feb. 19).

Adopted in 1990, the Principles of Community comprise an unofficial covenant among all members of the campus community to treat one another with civility, respect and mutual understanding “among the many parts of the whole,” and to celebrate our differences.

“It is important for us to develop a culturally competent organizational community that demonstrates cultural intelligence and cultural flexibility, and embraces inclusion and cultural humility,” said David Acosta, associate vice chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion at the UC Davis Health System.

“The Principles of Community are one guidepost that will help lead us toward excellence, innovation, and health equity.”

PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY WEEK

Davis campus

• Monday, Feb. 24 — Cultural Awareness Night, 6:30–9 p.m., Memorial Union, MU II. Featuring music and dance, spoken word and poetry, and a presentation on different modes of dress in different cultures — with student “models” accompanied by campus police cadets. Special guest poet Francisco X. Alarcón, a lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Plus an open mic for the sharing of cultural heritage through poetry or brief statements. Door prizes and refreshments. Chancellor Katehi plans to attend.

• Tuesday, Feb. 25 — Social Justice 101, 3-5 p.m., DeCarli Room, MU. A workshop on the concepts of privilege and oppression at individual, social and institutional levels.

• Wednesday, Feb. 26 — Soul Speaks, 6-9 p.m., multipurpose room, Student Community Center. A night of multicultural expression, showcasing the talents of identifying members and allies of the African Diaspora at UC Davis.

• Thursday, Feb. 27 — Staff Event: “How Can We Build Greater Campus and Workplace Community?” 11:45–1:30 p.m., registration required; lunch provided. The Staff Diversity Administrative Advisory Committee is sponsoring this event. , Come and share ideas and recommendations about how to implement the Principles of Community. Representatives from various interest and constituency groups will be present to share information and welcome new members. RSVPs are due by Wednesday, Feb. 19, by email.

• Thursday, Feb. 27 — Safe Zone Training, 12-3 p.m., Meeting Room C, Student Community Center. This training promotes a more welcoming and safe environment for LGBTQIA people. Registration required, by email.

• Thursday, Feb. 27 — Film, Brother Outside: The Life of Bayard Rustin, 4-6 p.m., Meeting Room E, Student Community Center. Widely recognized as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington and as a mentor to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Rustin was denied his proper place in history due to his sexual orientation.

• Thursday, Feb. 27 — Dialogue on Religious Diversity, 6-9 p.m., multipurpose room, Student Community Center.  Refreshments will be provided.

Sacramento campus

• Monday, Feb. 24 — Reaffirmation Ceremony: Living the Principles of Community, noon-1 p.m., third-floor foyer, Education Building. Refreshments and light luncheon will be provided.

• Tuesday, Feb. 25 — UC Davis Health System Principles of Community Video: Does It Still Have the Intended Impact It Was Designed to Have? Noon-1 p.m., 1222 Education Building. A town hall to watch the 2010 video and provide feedback on how the video could be improved, and how it could best be used to get the biggest impact. Refreshments will be provided.

• Wednesday, Feb. 26 — Understanding and Sensitivity School: Beyond the Basics, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, 1-5 p.m., 2400 Ticon III. Introduction to the language and health system policies related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Register.

• Thursday, Feb. 27 — UC Davis Health System Principles of Community Video: Does It Still Have the Intended Impact It Was Designed to Have? 10:30-11:30 a.m., auditorium, Cancer Center. A repeat of the Feb. 25 program. Refreshments will be provided.

• Thursday, Feb. 27 — Diversity and Inclusion in the 21st Century: Bridging the Moral and Excellence Imperatives, noon-1 p.m., 2222 Education Building. With guest speaker Marc Nivet, chief diversity officer, Association of American Medical Colleges. Refreshments and light luncheon will be provided.
