The Flame of Hope and about 1,000 athletes and volunteer coaches are on their way to UC Davis for the Northern California Special Olympics Summer Games this Friday through Sunday (June 22-24). The Davis campus is hosting the Games for the 10th year in a row. Athletes and coaches will be housed in the Segundo residence area.
The torch will arrive at The Pavilion to start the Opening Ceremonies, 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.
Admission to all events — including the Opening Ceremonies and the competitions — is free and open to the public. Competition will be held Saturday and Sunday in four sports:
- Bocce — 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. both days, A Street Field.
- Tennis — 8:15 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday and 8:15 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Marya Welch Tennis Center.
- Track and field — 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Toomey Field and Howard Field.
- Swimming — 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Schaal Aquatic Center. (Also, developmental events in swimming will be held from 10:15 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hickey Pool.)
Besides serving as the venue for the Opening Ceremonies, The Pavilion will be the site of two other events: the Healthy Athlete Village, 1:30-6 p.m. Saturday; and the Athlete Victory Dance, 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday. Olympic Villages will be set up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the A Street Field and at the Schaal Aquatic Center, and from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday on the A Street Field.
