THE OUTDOORS: At the arboretum

Interested in creating a traditional Mediterranean garden in your own back yard?

The climate part is easy, because California's Central Valley is easy — because the regions are "climate cousins."

But the physical changes — using time-honored techniques to reduce water use and create cool retreats — take some more doing. You are invited to learn more during a UC Davis Arboretum tour on July 11: "Bring the Mediterranean Into Your Back Yard."

The program, free and open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the Arboretum Terrace Garden.

Organizers said participants will learn about shade structures and water features, and container gardens—all meant to encourage outdoor living, lower ambient temperature, increase the sense of comfort and cut down on irrigation.

The Arboretum Terrace, a home demonstration garden for the Central Valley, is next to Borders Books and Music in the Davis Commons shopping center, First Street and Russell Boulevard. Free parking is available behind the shopping center.
