April 12, Monday, 3 p.m. -- George Smoot, a professor of astrophysics at UC Berkeley and researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will speak on "Cosmic Background Radiation: Window to the Creation and History of the Universe." His talk will begin at 3 p.m. in room 1065, Kemper Hall. Smoot shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in physics for his work on observing the "seeds" of galaxies in the very early universe, which provided evidence for how large-scale structures appeared in the universe after the Big Bang. He authored the book "Wrinkles in Time" (1993) with Keay Davidson, has made a cameo appearance on the television comedy "Big Bang Theory" and was a contestant on the quiz show "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" Smoot's talk is part of the Teller Lecture Series in Interdisciplinary Science sponsored by the UC Davis Department of Applied Science.
