The new year brings a completely redesigned Safety Services website.
“Technology and mobile platforms are ubiquitous in how our customers expect to access and receive information and how our staff manage their work,” Associate Vice Chancellor Jill Parker said. “It was critically important to align our offerings with modern communication methods.”
Features of the new site include:
- Responsive design for tablet and mobile devices
- Simplified navigation
- Filtering options to narrow a search
- FireNets merged into SafetyNets (documents covering best practices and policies on a variety of safety topics)
- Changes to SafetyNets are automatically reflected in printable PDFs created on the fly
- Improved forms with confirmation pages
Look for the landing-page video that will introduce you to the new site. Read more.
No butterfly (and no beer) yet!
Keep your eyes peeled and your butterfly net at the ready: There’s been no winner yet in Professor Art Shapiro’s annual Beer for a Butterfly contest.
“I don't expect it before the middle of the month — perhaps late in the month,” said Shapiro, who offers a pitcher of beer or its equivalent to the person who captures the first cabbage white butterfly of the year. In the more than four decades he’s been running the contest, he’s lost only three times.
Shapiro’s contest is really a long-term study of biological responses to climate change. The cabbage white butterfly needs a string of warm weather before it can fly, and its average first flight has been getting earlier and earlier as the region warms. Last year’s Jan. 26 catch was one of the latest in recent years.

TANA launches winter workshop
The UC Davis-afilliated TANA community art program announced the launch of its Winter Silkscreen Workshop. It starts this week with an introductory demonstration by Malaquias Montoya, professor emeritus who co-founded TANA in 2005.
The free demonstration is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 13). TANA, which stands for Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer, or “Art Workshop of the New Dawn,” is at 1224 Lemen Ave., Woodland.
The workshop, for ages 13 and up, encourages the exploration and representation of culture. The program is free, but space is limited, so you should sign up soon if you're interested in attending. In addition, you should attend the Jan. 13 introduction.
