Jump on Unitrans next Tuesday, Dec. 2, and ride to the Memorial Union Terminal — or walk over! — to celebrate the terminal’s recently completed renovation.

The “Opening Celebration,” complete with the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh and Unitrans’ vintage double-deckers, is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

The ASUCD and the city of Davis are partners in Unitrans, and, as such, the ASUCD president, Armando Figueroa, and the city’s mayor pro tem, Robb Davis, are on the list of speakers for the celebration.

The program also includes Adela De La Torre, vice chancellor of Student Affairs; Milton Lang, associate vice chancellor of Student Affairs; and Bob Segar, assistant vice chancellor for Campus Planning and Community Resources.

Unitrans serves the campus and city with 49 buses on 20 routes, carrying more than 3.9 million passengers a year — more than 22,000 on a typical day.

The terminal reopened with the start of the fall quarter, after a summer of work. The new and expanded terminal features a new layout that provides curbside entry and exit for all buses, to keep passengers from having to walk amid bus traffic.

Also, the contractor rebuilt the terminal surface and Howard Way, making them stronger to accommodate today’s larger buses (the old terminal dated back to the 1970s).

1 more Global Food Institute Student Fellowship

A Dateline story last week named Ryan Dowdy, Sophie Sapp and Jessica West as recipients of UC President’s Global Food Initiative Student Fellowships.

Turns out there’s one more: Samantha Smith, a graduate student in public health.

But, whereas Dowdy, Sapp and West are the UC Davis recipients (the president provided $7,500 to each campus to award three fellowships of $2,500 each), Smith is a fellowship choice of UC Agriculture and Natural Resources, which also had $7,500 for three fellowships.

With her fellowship, Smith plans to interview UC scientists about their research and extension efforts in agriculture, food and nutrition statewide, and capture their stories to share with the public via blogs and social media. Smith will work with Connie Schneider, director of ANR’s statewide Youth, Families and Communities Program.

Leadership Challenge Development Program

Enrollment is open until Dec. 12 for the Leadership Challenge Development Program, based on the “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” as identified by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner in a study of 25,000 leaders in the public and private sectors.

The cost is $250, a significant discount from the regular price of about $900. Staff Development and Professional Services is covering the difference.

The two-day program, Feb. 5-6 at UC Davis, is accompanied by a  360-degree, leadership practices inventory, to be completed in advance; and two “action training” sessions, Aug. 6 next year and Feb. 4, 2016.
