Freshman ‘decision day’ is a Saturday event now

The decision has been made to move freshman “decision day” to a Saturday from a Friday, thus taking pressure off weekday campus parking when upwards of 5,000 prospective freshmen and their family and friends come for the day.

This year’s freshman event — officially called Decision UC Davis — is set for Saturday, April 6, about three weeks after the students received word that they had been admitted, and about a month before the May 1 deadline to submit statements of intent to register.

The campus is telling visitors of two primary parking sites: Lot 25 in front of the Activities and Recreation Center, and the west entry garage.

The organizers said registration will open at 7 a.m. in the ARC-Pavilion courtyard, and campus tours and residence hall tours will begin at 8. The Pavilion is the venue for the official welcome at 9:30 and a student panel at 10.

The four undergraduate colleges plan receptions from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program also includes the Student Services and Activities Fair, and a faculty panel to close out the day, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Geospatial Consulting @ UC Davis

Need help with geospatial questions and projects? Geospatial Consulting @ UC Davis, for campus researchers and programs, provides analysts to help on GIS, GPS, mapping or spatial modeling projects, small and large.

James Quinn, a professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, and director of the Information Center for the Environment, oversees Geospatial Consulting, and Michele Tobias, a postdoctoral scholar, administers the day-to-day activities.

As more requests for assistance come in, Geospatial Consulting anticipates hiring graduate students as consultants.

Farmers Market returns for spring

After taking the winter off, the UC Davis Farmers Market returns for spring quarter, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Wednesday on the Silo Patio.

The spring kickoff, set for April 3, weather permitting, will include face painting, music and photo booth, the organizers said, to go with fresh fruits and veggies.

The farmers market also features prepared food from the Gunrock Pub and the CoHo South Café, and the Star Ginger and Shah’s Halal food trucks, and cooking demonstrations.

Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to come dressed for fun next week! The organizers said $2 market vouchers will be given to the first 50 people who arrive in Aggie gear or Davis Farmers Market gear. (The Davis market runs the farmers side of the campus market.)

‘Soaring’ ticket deadline extended to April 1

You now have until Monday (April 1) to buy your tickets for Soaring to New Heights, the campus’s premier celebration of diversity.

The 23rd annual event, featuring an international buffet, is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in Freeborn Hall.

Department-unit representation is highly recommended, and release time with supervisory approval is appropriate.

Only 500 tickets are available; they are available for $5 each on a first-come, first-served basis. No tickets will be sold at the door.
