The campus announced an expansion of child care funding and a simplified process to receive such aid, in response to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi’s commitment to improve support and services for student parents,

The improvements stems from a collaboration among WorkLife (a unit of central campus Human Resources), Graduate Studies, Financial Aid and Student Aid Accounting. Under the plan, all child care funding is now being administered through the WorkLife unit.

Three programs are available:

• Graduate Student Child Care Grant — A flat $600 quarterly or $900 per semester for graduate and professional students. Not based upon financial need, only the need for child care.

• Community Based Care Grant — Up to $900 per quarter, per child. Need-based funding to all eligible students (undergraduate, graduate and professional).

• Campus Affiliated Care Subsidy — 50 percent of tuition at one of the four on-campus child development centers. The subsidies, funded by a grant from the Department of Education, are based on financial need.

Faithful partners to the end: Urko and Max

The names of fallen law enforcement dogs Urko and Max are being added this week to the Faithful Partner Monument on the grounds of UC Davis — the 40th and 41st K-9s to be listed after losing their lives in the line of duty.

A public ceremony, including a procession of K-9s and their handlers from around California, is scheduled to begin at noon. The program includes remarks by Michael Lairmore, dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, and UC Davis Police Chief Matt Carmichael.

The monument, a German shepherd atop a seven-pointed law enforcement star made of granite, is outside Gladys Valley Hall (southwest corner), at the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Max, a narcotics detection canine for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, died Aug. 25, 2011, after accidentally ingesting liquid methamphetamine found during the search of a vehicle.

Urko died Nov. 29, 1989, in Hawthorne (Los Angeles County), after his partner stopped to block an intersection to aid in other officers' pursuit of a suspected carjacker. Urko’s handler opened the door, the dog jumped out — and the fleeing car ran over him.

Canceled: OE-Shared Services brown bag

The Organizational Excellence office and the Shared Services Center announced the cancellation of a brown bag that had been scheduled for Wednesday (Oct. 23).
