There have now been three reports of people yelling racial slurs at students on the Davis campus, prompting Chancellor Linda P.B. Kathei to repeat what she said in an campuswide email last week after the first two incidents:

“When one member of our community is wounded by the words and actions of others, we, as a university, must unite to stand against cruelty and intolerance,” the chancellor wrote on Nov. 22. “On behalf of the entire UC Davis family, I affirm that we will not tolerate these acts nor will we be intimidated.”

Today (Nov. 26), she told Dateline UC Davis: "As an educational institution, we have a responsibility to help educate members of our community on the value of diversity and the perspectives of others. Education is one of the key ways we will be able to improve our collective communities."

Police say all three incidents over the last week or so occurred on the east side of campus. Lt. Gregory Murphy said patrols have been stepped up in the area, both as a deterrence and to reassure people who walk or bike in the area.

Katehi noted: “The campus police and city of Davis police are working together to preserve a safe environment for all of us.”

‘Transitioning to Retirement’ workshop series

The workshop series “Transitioning to Retirement” is set to begin in January for academics and staff members who are within five years of retirement.

The series comprises three-hour sessions on Fridays for five weeks, Jan. 10 to Feb. 7; each day includes a session for staff (9 a.m.-noon) and one for academics (1:30-4:30 p.m.). Space is limited, therefore early registration is advised.

Topics include the UC Retirement Plan and Social Security, health benefits and wellness in retirement, financial planning for retirement, work-life transition and “the next chapter.”

InDesign and printing for beginners, not designers

Repro Graphics announced that it is offering a staff development course on InDesign and printing next month. The course is for beginners, not designers.

The lead teacher, Kerie Holck of Repro Graphics, isn’t a graphic artist, explained Brian Wadell, director of the campus graphics and printing shop. “But she has 35 years of experience in the printing industry and knows a lot about proper preparation of digital files for printing.

“There are a lot of people on campus who use desktop publishing tools, including InDesign, who don’t need in-depth knowledge but could use some help in preparing files for the printshop.”

Wadell described the course as hands-on and listed these topics: file set-up with or without bleeds, changing fonts and colors, placing text and photos, packaging files for printing, and creating high-resolution PDFs for printing. Lisa Wells, a designer with the Office of Strategic Communications, will provide technical assistance.

The class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Dec. 12. Enrollment can be arranged via the UC Learning Center website (search for course “DAC-TT0369-121213”). Space is limited so early enrollment is encouraged.

Save the date: ADMAN Mid-Management Conference

ADMAN, the Administrative Management Group, has issued a “save the date” advisory for the group’s 2014 Mid-Management Conference, to be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the Activities and Recreation Center.

The workshop-style development day will have the theme, “Develop Yourself As a Leader for UC Davis!”

The organizers said Robin Johnson will deliver the keynote address. She is the author of Dance of Leadership: Mastering the Art of Making a Difference Using Your Authentic Leadership Style.

Your pets get a discount at Community Practice

The School of Veterinary Medicine offers this reminder to UC Davis employees with pets: You get a 10 percent discount at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and its Community Practice for small animals.

Not only that, but Community Practice offers convenient scheduling for employees: Drop off your pet as early as 7:45 a.m., then go off to work while the Community Practice staff looks after your pet. Come back for your pet’s appointment, then leave him or her at Community Practice until you get off work (latest pickup time 6 p.m.). Saturday appointments also are available.

Community Practice’s three veterinarians specialize in veterinary family practice. They are primary care providers, focusing on wellness care and disease prevention or management, and offering services that include vaccinations, spaying-neutering, parasite control, nutrition counseling, and behavioral tools to enhance and maintain the human-animal bond.

Students assist in Community Practice, gaining the experience they need if they are headed into general practice themselves.
