'NEW CINEMA IN CHILE,' WITH DISCUSSIONS IN SPANISH

The Hemispheric Institute on the Americas has organized a program on “New Cinema in Chile,” featuring two films and question-and-answer sessions with the directors, followed by a roundtable discussion with Carlos Flores Delpino, founder and director of Chile’s Film School.

The films, Mami te amo (2008) and La ciudad de los fotógrafos (2006), are in Spanish with English subtitles. The question-and-answer sessions and the roundtable will be in Spanish.

The program, free and open to the public, is scheduled for today (Oct. 23), in 26 Wellman Hall.

Organizers said the program will begin with introductions at 6 p.m. Organizers said light refreshments will be served between the films.

Mami te amo (I Love You, Mom) — A mother who is going blind leaves her daughter alone every day. The girl only wants to please her mother, trying to imitate her as much as possible, until one day her games result in something unexpected. 6:10 p.m., followed by a conversation with the director, Elisa Eliash.

La ciudad de los fotógrafos (The City of Photographers) — About photojournalists who shot and framed Chile’s people and turmoil from many perspectives during the Pinochet regime. 7:45 p.m., followed by a conversation with the director, Sebastián Moreno.

The roundtable discussion with Delpino will come at the end of the program.

The Humanities Institute is co-sponsoring the program.
