The first of the Davis campus's annual culture weeks is next week: Native American Culture Days, April 6-11, with one additional event planned for April 15. Other weeks in the offing: Asian Pacific Culture Week: April 20-25; La Raza Cultural Days, April 27-May 3; and Black Family Week, May 11-16.
Here is the schedule for Native American Culture Days:
April 6
• Sunrise Ceremony, with Coastal Pomo dancers, 5:30-7 a.m., Putah Creek Lodge
• Reviving Southeastern Cherokee Pottery, with Victoria Mitchell, noon, 3201 Hart Hall
• Uniting Ixachitzlan, presented by MEChA, 6 p.m., 107 Wellman Hall.
April 7
• Good Eats From Indian Country, demonstration, 5-6 p.m., Silo
• Sounds from the Seventh Generation, music of indigenous resistance, featuring Semilla, Quese Imc and Audiopharmacy, 7 p.m., Coffee House, Memorial Union.
April 8
• Native American Studies graduate student panel, noon, 3201 Hart Hall
• Two Spirits, One Journey, film, and talk by the filmmaker, Sean Imitates Dog, 6 p.m., East Conference Room, MU.
April 9
• Native Mascots, discussion about the use of Native Americans as mascots and the use of the word “squaw” in society today, followed by letter-writing campaign, noon, 3201 Hart Hall
• NE’UE Film Festival, documentaries about the Native American experience: Senorita Extraviada, When Your Hands Are Tied and Popol Vuh, 6 p.m., Griffin Lounge, MU.
April 10
• Sixth annual Native Youth Conference: Students Empowering Students for Change, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Freeborn Hall
• Sunset Ceremony, with Colusa dancers, 6-10 p.m., Putah Creek Lodge.
April 11
• 37th annual UC Davis Powwow: Weaving Our Generations Together, for the native and non-native community. Intertribal social dancing, dance contests, arts and crafts vendors, and Indian taco booths. 9 a.m.-midnight (grand entry noon and 6 p.m.), Pavilion at the Activities and Recreation Center.
April 15
• Native professional panel, about developing your career without losing site of your cultural heritage, 3 p.m., 114 South Hall.
