Humphrey Fellows from around the world will introduce themselves and their research topics in public forums, one this week and another next week.
The fellows are at UC Davis for preacademic orientation and training before beginning their yearlong fellowships at universities around the United States. UC Davis Extension has conducted the orientation and training for nearly 20 years.
The U.S.-run Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is for accomplished mid-career professionals from designated countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Eurasia. The fellowships comprise nondegree graduate study and related professional experience.
The Global Forums give the fellows the opportunity to discuss their research and what they hope to learn in the United States, to bring back home.
The first forum, scheduled from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (July 30), will feature 18 fellows from 15 countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Brazil, China, Congo (Brazzaville), Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Indonesia, Kosovo, Mauritania, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Ukraine and Vietnam.
The fellows work in such fields as public health policy and management; human trafficking policy and prevention; public health policy and management; finance and banking; public policy analysis and public administration; economic development; communications and journalism; law and human rights; educational administration, planning and policy; and urban and regional planning.
The first forum's program includes presentations on "Reporting from Federally Administrated Tribal Areas in Pakistan" "The Three M’s: Military, Media and Militants," "Social and Cultural Stigma on Girls' Education in Mauritania: Leaders of the Bedroom and Kitchen, NOT the House and the Office," and "The Role of Social Networking in the Current Ukrainian Crisis: Click 'Like' and Change Your Future!."
The second forum, with 15 fellows, is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 7).
Both forums will take place at the International House, 10 College Place, across from Howard Way at the campus’s north entry. The forums are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
