Three dozen butterflies — symbols of new life — were recently released during a tribute to those who gave life to others.
Hosted annually by UC Davis Transplant Center and Sierra Donor Services, the ceremony recognizes the generosity of UC Davis Medical Center patients who became organ and tissue donors. Because of them and others like them, 1,200 people in the Sacramento region received lifesaving transplants last year.

Instagram: Veteran student tells his story
UC Davis: “I feel like the Army was the right choice because it made me become a stronger person. I learned a lot of skills and met a lot of people who taught me to be a better person. If I weren’t to have joined, that would’ve never occurred and who knows where I’d be... My grandpa has a ranch in Mexico but he was never really able to plant and cultivate it. So it’s just 400 hectares that are bare. He always told me that someday I would help him grow his farm. It’s named the “Illusion Ranch”, so it’s kind of like the dream. That kind of steered me to want to study how to grow things.”
