THE DOWNLOAD: Officer Discharged, Animals Helped

About 100 fellow California Highway Patrol officers and UC Davis Medical Center staff gave David Gordon a warm send-off as he headed back home to Yuba City last Friday (Feb. 21) after a four-month stay in the hospital. As Gorden walked past officers and members of his UC Davis care team, he and his wife were greeted with hugs, ear-to-ear smiles and rounds of applause and cheers. Gordon was hospitalized in October 2019 after being injured in the line of duty.

Pair of vets return from Australia

UC Davis veterinarians Jamie Peyton and Eric Johnson have returned from a trip Down Under, where they helped some of the numerous animals injured in Australia’s massive bush fires.

“People think about the animals when they're first rescued or first injured, but those animals need care for weeks,” Peyton told KCRA, explaining her technique of using fish skins as bandages for burned animals.

Peyton, chief of Integrative Medicine Service at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, traveled with Michelle Oakley, star of Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet on the Nat Geo WILD network. Oakley said in an update to an online fundraiser that Peyton’s fish-skin technique came in handy.

“Dr. Peyton arrived and we went to burn areas to work with local vets and wildlife rescuers to find animals, and put fish skin grafts on many badly burned feet,” Oakley wrote. “This means instant pain relief, faster healing and they won’t need bandage changes every few days — which is incredibly stressful for wild animals.”

Basketball and beer, tacos and 3-pointers

The Aggie basketball teams will play a doubleheader at home this Saturday (Feb. 29): the women at 2:30 p.m. vs. UC Riverside, the men at 5 p.m. vs. Long Beach State — and athletics is offering a $25 deal to see both games and receive a flight of five Sudwerk beers

After that, there’s just one more home game: the men vs. Hawaii, 7 p.m. Thursday, March 5 — and athletics has a deal for that contest, too: $25 will get you a taco platter and drink from taqueria Guadalajara, in addition to your ticket to the game.

As March Madness approaches, the Aggie women are 10-3 and sitting in first place in the Big West Conference (Hawaii is in second place at 8-4), while the Aggie men are 7-6 and fighting for second place with UC Santa Barbara. The Big West Conference women’s tournament will be held March 10-14, and the men’s tournament will be held March 12-14.
