Crime Prevention: What You Can Do

Safe Rides van
The campus Police Department offers Safe Rides in vans driven by Aggie Host security officers.

Crimes occur in every community, even in a friendly environment like the UC Davis campus. The most commonly reported crime on our campus is property theft. For example, police are now investigating a dozen burglaries in Bainer Hall since Sept. 9, in which the culprit or culprits forced open doors to labs and offices during weekends. Cameras, computer monitors, tools and other items are missing.

There were no signs of forced entry to the building. Officers believe the burglar or burglars got in with a key or through an unlocked door — or someone let them in.

There are simple things you can do to prevent property theft:

  • Keep doors and windows locked.
  • Don’t let someone you don’t know “tailgate,” or follow you through locked doors in residence halls, labs or other buildings. If they are supposed to be there, they will have a key.
  • If possible, place valuable items, such as laptops, out of sight and away from windows.
  • If you see something suspicious, report it to police.

Personal safety

City of Davis police have reported five armed robberies since Sept. 19. All the cases are still under investigation.

  • Always be alert to your surroundings and avoid situations that make you apprehensive.
  • Stay in well-lit and populated areas as much as possible and avoid walking alone at night. Students are welcome to summon Safe Rides — call 530-754-COPS or use the TapRide app.
  • Report suspicious persons and/or behavior to the police as soon as possible.
  • Cooperate if you are confronted by an armed or potentially armed person; your safety is paramount, property can be replaced.
  • Activate tracking software on phones and electronic devices.
  • If you feel you or others are in danger, call 9-1-1.
