The UC Davis community should soon see an initial set of proposed campus reforms in response to the Reynoso task force report, campus officials said Thursday (April 26).

"We're working toward having a preliminary set of actions to share with the campus community by the middle of next week," campus spokesperson Barry Shiller said.

"These will include interim steps already taken, others that are now under way and several ideas that deserve thoughtful consideration by the entire community."

The task force, chaired by UC Davis law professor emeritus and former California Supreme Court Associate Justice Cruz Reynoso, unveiled its report at a campus forum on April 11. A week later, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi appointed Matt Carmichael to a one-year term as campus police chief, pending a national recruitment. (Carmichael had served as acting chief since last November's pepper-spraying incident.)

Carmichael has asked officials of Peace Officer Standards and Training, or POST, to conduct a thorough examination of department policies and training protocols. The POST input will inform a top-to-bottom review of all campus police operations.

POST officials also will work with UC Davis administrative leaders, including Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter, who will provide interim operational oversight of the campus Police Department beginning next month.

The proposed campus reforms will be published on the university's website and updated regularly, Shiller said.
