Quick Summary
- Major upgrades intended to improve mobility for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists
- Project runs 16.5 miles along I-80 (including Davis and the Yolo Causeway) and also takes in 3 miles of U.S. Highway 50
- Feedback will be considered as Caltrans develops and designs project for late-2024 construction start
Caltrans announced it will hold an open house in Davis next week to gather public comment on the agency’s plan for major upgrades along the Interstate 80 corridor west and east of Davis, in a project intended to improve mobility for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.
The Yolo 80 Corridor Improvement Project stretches about 16.5 miles between Kidwell Road west of Davis, and West El Camino Avenue in Sacramento. The project also takes in the three-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 50 (which doubles as Business 80) between I-80 and I-5.
“The I-80/US-50 corridor experiences a high travel demand which has led to severe traffic congestion and impaired mobility along the route,” the project website reads. “The current travel demands have exceeded the highway design capacity, which has caused bottlenecks for the traveling public.
“Through the addition of additional bus/carpool lanes, bike/pedestrian crossings, improved signing and striping, and rehabilitation work, we look to improve mobility across this impacted corridor.”
A Caltrans news release lists the agency’s primary goals with this project: improve traffic flow, increase safety, improve travel time reliability and reduce vehicle emissions.
The open house comes at a time when the project is in its early stages. As a result, officials said, Caltrans has time to consider all of the feedback when developing and designing the improvements. The schedule shows the process of environmental review starting in January, and construction beginning in late 2024.
Open house details
The Davis open house is scheduled from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Blanchard Room at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Library, 315 E. 14th St. Caltrans officials said the event provides an opportunity for people to learn more about the project, and to share their preferences and concerns.
People who have questions about accessibility at the open house location, or who wish to request special accommodations, should contact Deanna Shoopman, public information chief, Caltrans District 3, 703 B St., Marysville 95901; voice phone 530-741-4572; or California Relay Service TTY number 711.
