If you work in a lab, one of the best habits is closing unattended chemical fume hoods—contraptions that consume a great deal of energy while protecting researchers from hazardous gases. To spread the message, UC Davis has launched a campaign to remind lab workers that “a closed hood is the safest hood.” In the weeks ahead, about 750 colorful stickers will be placed near fume hoods in at least six major research buildings on campus. The bright strips carry messages like “more safe, less energy” and “keep sash below red zone. “If all UC Davis researchers and instructors closed their hoods habitually, the campus would save $80,000 to $100,000 annually,” Doyle said.
