The campus’s Hutchinson Child Development Center is planning to celebrate National Work and Family Month by participating in a national read-in.

Children, families and staff at the child care center are due to read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar — joining thousands of others around the country on Oct. 8 as they try to break a record for having the most children and adults read the same book on the same day.

Jumpstart, a national, nonprofit organization, is coordinating the record-setting effort.

Barbara Ashby, the campus’s WorkLife manager, said the Hutchison Child Development Center’s read-in is but one example of the university’s efforts to help employees achieve balance between their work lives and their regular lives.

Another example is the WorkLife Brown Bag Series — free programs during the noon hour. The fall series is scheduled to begin Oct. 22, with a program on staycations — fun, affordable vacationing. Location for the one-hour program is the Cabernet Room in the Silo; pre-enrollment is not required.
