UC Davis' art workshop in Woodland is celebrating Dia de los Muertos with altar installations by members of the community, accompanied by music and a talk on Mexica culture, 5 to 7 p.m. Friday (Nov. 2).
The celebration is a collaborative effort of Taller Arte del Nuevo Amancer (Art Workshop of the New Dawn) and Woodland Community College.
The UC Davis Department of Chicana/o Studies manages Taller Arte del Nuevo Amancer, or TANA, at 1224 Lemen Ave.
The Dia de Los Muertos program includes music by Orion Chacon-Hurst and a talk by Professor Juan Hernandez of California State University, Sacramento.
The altars are traditional — a way to honor the dead in the hope that their departed souls will revisit their family and friends. Such altars often include photos and other remembrances of those who have passed.
More information is available on the TANA blog.
Fractalicious and Nectare
UC Davis' Institute for Exploration in Theatre, Dance and Performance announced two productions:
• Fractalicious! — Produced by Bryan Reynolds and Transversal Theater Company. Combining various media "to make a truly unique, synesthetic result while exploring the question: 'How does speed, scale and proximity influence value, desire and feeling?'" Hmmmm, wondering what that means? Check out this video promo, or this one. 8 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, Nov. 5-6, Lab A, Wright Hall. Free (limited seating). Rated R (The Motion Picture Association of America uses the R rating for "restricted," meaning children under 17 require accompanying parent or adult guardian.)
• Nectare — "A journey through time and space, emotion and narrative; a collaboration in dance performance between choreographers Jarrell Iu-Hui Chua and Christine Germain blurring the boundaries between viewer and performer." 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, Nelson Gallery. Free (suggested donations at the door). The show is a prelude to the choreographers’ Master of Fine Arts theses, due to be presented in early 2013.
Macbeth: The Radio Play
The Davis Shakespeare Ensemble presents the haunting tragedy Macbeth as "an engrossing sonic experience," inspired by the format of 1930s radio plays. The DSE production features unique live sound effects and an original score by Richard Chowenhill.
Macbeth: The Radio Play, the first production in the ensemble's third season, opened last week in the arboretum's gazebo and continues through Saturday (Nov. 3), regardless of rain.
