Freedom to try any field of study

UC Davis is one of the few universities that will encourage you to be adaptable. In fact, many of our students start out as undeclared to give themselves room for exploration and self-discovery. Plus, we offer robust support for those who want to switch majors.

University vs. college vs. school

People often use these words to mean the same thing. But at a university, each one has a different meaning.

What is a university?

A university serves as the overall structure. It includes all the colleges, schools and degree programs within it.

What is a college?

A college brings together related areas of study, such as science or engineering. Most bachelor’s degree programs are based in a college.

What is a school?

A school focuses on a certain field or career, such as law or medicine, and mainly serves students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree.
