Aggies will dance, discuss, volunteer and more this month as part of Black Futures Month.

“Throughout this month, our dedication extends to recalling, commemorating, and gaining insights from Black history,” the Center for African Diaspora Student Success said of a wide range of events planned throughout February. “It’s an opportunity to recognize the global marginalization of Blackness and strive internally to elevate marginalized identities within communities for genuine liberation.”

Chancellor Gary S. May honored the month in a video with Dionica Bell, director of the center, and Daniel Egziabher, community coordinator with the Cross Cultural Center.

“It’s a time to recognize the future of the Black community and honor our diversity,” May said. “It also means remembering the historic contributions of African Americans and learning from our country’s struggles and triumphs, and how much more we need to do in the name of equity.”

The Center for African Diaspora Student Success lists numerous events, including:

On Thursday (Feb. 8), UC Davis’ National Pan-Hellenic Council will perform at halftime of the UC Davis men’s basketball game. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the University Credit Union Center. And on Saturday, the council will host a 9 a.m. cleanup event at Davis’ Community Park, located at 203 E 14th St.

The Manetti Shrem Museum will host “Don’t Touch My Hair,” a workshop about the social and political implications of Black women’s hair. It is set for 6 p.m. on Feb. 14.

And on Feb. 20, the Women’s Resources and Research Center will host “Witchcraft, Black Magic and Racism” at noon in its library on the first floor of North Hall.

Later in the month, the dining commons will showcase “dishes honoring Black contributions and influence to American cuisine.” Those items will be served Feb. 26-March 1 in the Segundo, Tercero and Cuarto dining commons.
