AUTHOR'S VISIT

Nicholas Kristof, co-author of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, is scheduled to participate in a forum and give a talk at UC Davis on Monday, Jan. 13.

• Forum@MC — “All Hands on Deck: Supporting Women in STEM," 4-5 p.m., Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Free and open to the public.
• Talk — 8-9:30 p.m., Jackson Hall, followed by book signing in the lobby. Tickets required for the talk.

The Campus Community Book Project and other campus sponsors are seeking photos for a January event showcasing women’s contributions to agriculture, food and nutrition — from fields to packinghouses and markets, in businesses, labs, restaurants and homes, and to our plates.

The program, “Women Feeding the World: Farmers, Mothers and CEOs,” is free and open to the public, in conjunction with the 2013-14 campus book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.

Photos (and the stories behind them) are welcome from students and researchers and others who have worked with women involved in food production in California and around the world. See photo submission details below.

The gallery presentation will be followed by an evening of stories from women who play a variety of roles in the food system.

All of this is scheduled the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the Conference Center Ballroom. The program begins at 6 p.m., and the program will run to 8:30 p.m.

Co-sponsors at UC Davis: World Food Center; Blum Center for Developing Economies; International Programs Office, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Horticulture Collaborative Research Support Program; Program in International and Community Nutrition; and Women’s Resources and Research Center. Freedom from Hunger, a Davis-based international organization, is also a co-sponsor.

Photo submissions

Each photo should be accompanied by a write-up (up to 250 words) of the story behind the photo. Multiple entries are welcome. Student work will receive priority.

Selected submissions will be shared in an online gallery, and a limited number will be printed and featured at the event. “Enter now to help us get the conversation started,” the organizers said. The deadline is Friday, Jan. 10.

The "Women Feed the World" event website includes a link to upload photos and stories. The forthcoming gallery will be on the same website.
