The mission is the same: connecting students, staff and faculty with volunteer opportunities in the community. But the name is new: the Community Service Resource Center, formerly the Human Corps Community Service Office.
The name change better reflects the office's services, according to a news release. The center remains part of the Internship and Career Center.
"The Community Service Resource Center will continue to be a liaison between the campus and the community for volunteer opportunities," the new release states.
The center maintains a database as a free service, listing volunteer opportunities with some 500 nonprofit organizations. In addition, the center keeps in e-mail contact with more than 5,000 students, sending weekly messages about local community service opportunities.
Also, the center provides advising services to students and staff who are interested in interning, volunteering or working with nonprofit organizations.
The center also sponsors such events as the Community Service Fair and Weekends of Service, as well as the Community Service Awards.
With the name change announcement, the center also provided the dates for its first two Weekends of Service for 2009-10: fall quarter, Oct. 24-25; and winter quarter, Feb. 6-7. The spring quarter dates have not yet been determined,
The Community Service Fair is set for Nov. 18, in conjunction with the Fall Internship and Career Center Fair.
The Community Service Resource Center is in the same place as the old Hjuman Corps, 225 South Hall, and the telephone number is the same, too: (530) 752-3813.
The e-mail address and Web site address are new: communityservice@ucdavis.edu and iccweb.ucdavis.edu/cs. The old addresses will forward to the new addresses during 2009-10.
