Neighbors Night Out: More than 100 parties

More than 100 parties had been organized as of midweek for Davis Neighbors Night Out, set for Oct. 11.

The Neighbors Night Out Web site lists all the parties, most of them dinner and barbecue potlucks, plus a couple of appetizer potlucks.

In many cities, block parties are a summertime affair. Davis Neighbors Night Out is held in the fall, after students have moved in — so they and their neighbors can start the new academic year on a positive note.

UC Davis, the Associated Students and the city of Davis sponsor the event.

Quarter Century Club

The UC Davis Quarter Century Club will initiate 98 25-year employees and honor 52 current members who have marked 50 years with the campus when it convenes its annual dinner meeting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 22. The event is scheduled to be held in the ARC Ballroom.

Staff and faculty employees who are identified by UC Davis Human Resources as having been employed by UC Davis for 25 years receive an invitation to the event to share stories, renew acquaintances, and be recognized and commended for their contributions to the campus.

Invitations have been mailed to all new and current members, and reservations are due by Oct. 15. For more information about the dinner, call Jean Wigglesworth, Ceremonies and Special Events, (530) 754-2011.

Shuttle fare going up

The UC Davis Health System’s transportation office announced a 50-cent increase in the price of a one-way shuttle ride between the Sacramento and Davis campuses. The new fare, $1.50, was set to take effect Oct. 1.

Other new rates: 10-ride pass, $15 (up from $10) and monthly pass, $45, up from $30.

The fare increases are the first since the boarding pass program began more than 10 years ago. Officials attributed the increases to higher operational costs, including the need to buy “clean-air” replacement buses.

The intercampus shuttle is a joint operation, with funding from Parking and Transportation Services on the Sacramento campus, Transportation and Parking Services on the Davis campus, the UC Davis Medical Center and passengers.

Vanpool needs a rider

A new vanpool that originates in Fairfield is looking for a 12th rider. The van, named Solano One to Davis, is for people who work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on campus or in the city of Davis.

Fire Day on the Quad

The campus Fire Department’s third annual Fire Department Day on the Quad is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 6, amid National Fire Prevention Week.

Students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in hands-on firefighting activities with hoses and fire extinguishers. An air ambulance helicopter is due to come in for a landing at about 10:30.

While they are on the Quad, firefighters will be running a Fill the Boot drive, to raise money for the Pacific Burn Institute.

Back from Ventura

A UC Davis fire crew returned safe and sound Sept. 25 from Southern California, after working a couple of days on the Guiberson wildfire in Ventura County.

The crew journeyed to the fire in a state firetruck, Engine 251, which is normally housed and used by the campus Fire Department; in return, the university provides a crew whenever the state needs the engine for an emergency.
